For years, I struggled with my love for modern art and the camera’s opposing penitence for capturing imagery with detailed realism. Matisse’s collage cutouts gave me an idea.

I began cutting out shapes and composing them into overlapping collages. Then I cut each shape into a mask that I could affix to the front of a view camera film holder. This would allow me to photograph only the imagery within that particular shape. Thus I could affix anew mask and photograph a different scene on top of the first, etc.

The completed image is a collage with wonderful things happening where the images overlap, and with the remarkable detail that only a large format camera can capture.

The final, single transparency is then printed on the magnificent photographic paper, Ilfochrome.
I call this abstract realism.
